Voyager II about to exit the solar system
May 24, 2006The Voyager II space probe is about to hit the outer limit of the sun’s heliosphere. When it crosses it will be bombarded by interstellar gas instead of the solar gases and particles it encounters inside the heliosphere.
I’m old enough to remember watching on TV when the Voyager I and II probes would transmit their amazing photos of the gas giants. It’s amazing the probes are still operational after all these years, inicredible that the atomic batteries have lasted this long.
I’m also old enough to remember how lame it was to see Voyager used as a plot point in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Something of a low point for a Trekker like myself.
