Oracle outage is not comforting
June 30, 2006All morning I’ve been trying to log into the Knowledge Exchange at Oracle.com, it’s a site where Portal developers can learn and exchange tips and such. But it’s been out all morning long, I’ve been trying it maybe every fifteen minutes or so.
Doesn’t exactly give you warm fuzzy feelings–Oracle wants you to run your 24/7 enterprise on their Portal software yet they can’t keep their own Portal sites up and running. Of course I’ve been in their shoes before, trying to revive a site after an outage. Web software is especially cranky because of all the pieces involved–you’ve got fileservers, a database server, maybe an authentication system, a Web server, some custom modules installed in the Web server that have to re-start in a particular order, a content management system, third-party vendors such as payment processing, and so on. It just drives you insane, one of the reasons I wanted to get out of working in that kind of Web environment.
So I do empathize with the Oracle folks. But dammit I need to log into Knowledge Exchange, so hurry up and get it fixed. I’m trying to figure out how to build a particular type of portlet, and I want to make some progress on it today before I leave for the long holiday weekend.
