I’m still eating my watermelon cold

So filed under the heading of “Scientists trying to make life less enjoyable” is this piece of research that shows ice-cold watermelon is less nutritious than room temperature watermelon. Apparently the melons will continue to produce nutrients like beta-carotene even after they’re harvested. Unless of course you chill them, which slows the production […]

I’ve been accepted

So clearly the standards at University of Louisville must be pretty low, because I just got a letter yesterday informing me I’ve been accepted to the Graduate program. So now comes the hard part–deciding if I really want to return to the grind of attending classes, reading over-priced text books, dealing with lab partners […]

Oracle documentation sucks

I gotta say this for Microsoft–whatever you might think about their products, they do make sure everything is thoroughly documented. And if there’s no official documentation, you’re certain to find something thru Google or one of the many Microsoft blog sites.
The same cannot be said for Oracle products. I spent most of today […]

Hungry all day long

My training cycle looks like this:
Tuesday: short run
Wednesday: middle-length run
Thursday: no run, but do some upper-body weights
Friday: short run (same length as the Tuesday short run)
Saturday: rest day
Sunday: long run
Monday: rest day

Now yesterday was the middle-length run, for this week that means a 4-miler. I know that isn’t really very long, especially considering my […]

This is not news: Lance Bass is gay

So Lance Bass, one of the N’Sync boys, has admitted he’s gay. First off, this is not news–he might wish it was news but come on, everybody already knew he was gay. It’s like Condoleeza Rice confiding that she’s black. Um, yeah we already knew that.
Second off, Bass hasn’t exactly been in […]

CNET page views drop 5 percent

Due to the ongoing stock-options investigation, CNET was not able to release their profit numbers for the past quarter. But they did release revenue numbers. And while the topline looks good, page-view drop seems like an ominous sign.
Sales were $92 million, about 2 percent higher than Wall Street’s consensus estimate of $90 million. […]

California sucking down more electricity than ever

While the heat wave that gripped most of the nation has broken in this part of the country, at least for now, it’s apparently still in full force out West. They’re warning about possible rolling blackouts in California today.
The part of the story that caught my eye is the usage–they’re predicting peak 52,000 megawatts, […]

Shins: you are the weakest link!

When I started this marathon training I’d been thinking that my asthma was going to be the biggest risk. But it appears that’s well under control between the daily dose of AdVair and my new habit of puffing the albuterol inhaler just before I go running. Even during the air-emergency days last week […]

A “new” version of Superman II coming this fall

Now this is something I hadn’t heard–back in the late 70’s apparently Richard Donner was supposed to direct both Superman and Superman II. In fact, he was shooting Superman II but then parted from the film due to “creative differences”. Well now in something that seems quite unprecedented, Warner Brothers plans to release […]

Apparently I’m 3 times more likely to die right about now

A study released earlier this week found that teenage girls who were obese were 3 times more likely to die by middle age than their normal-weight counterparts. Now the study involved women, not men, so there’s no guarantee whatsoever that the proportion is the same for us guys. But if I were a […]
