Hungry all day long

July 27, 2006

My training cycle looks like this:

Tuesday: short run
Wednesday: middle-length run
Thursday: no run, but do some upper-body weights
Friday: short run (same length as the Tuesday short run)
Saturday: rest day
Sunday: long run
Monday: rest day

Now yesterday was the middle-length run, for this week that means a 4-miler. I know that isn’t really very long, especially considering my end goal of running a marathon. But at this point in my training that is a pretty good distance, and I was fairly tired at the end. Though I actually felt better than after Tuesday’s short run, which I take to be a positive sign.

The weird thing though was that I was hungry the entire day after the Wednesday run. I ate my way thru the entire day–probably every hour I had to go down to the lobby snack shop and grab something to eat. I think I made pretty good choices: small bag of peanuts, low-fat milk, that kind of thing. But still, I was amazed at how hungry I was despite all that snacking.

Today I’m back to my normal appetite, in fact if anything I probably have eaten less today than normal. Maybe yesterday was an aberration. I guess I’ll find out on Sunday, after the long run. If I’m hungry all day this Sunday then I know there’s a relationship between my longer runs and my appetite.

This marathon training is gonna wind up costing me a lot of money. I thought the shoes were a big expense, but if I have to snack like this after all the middle-distance and long-distance runs then I’m gonna wind up spending way more at the snack shop than I did at the shoe store.
