I’ve been accepted

July 29, 2006

So clearly the standards at University of Louisville must be pretty low, because I just got a letter yesterday informing me I’ve been accepted to the Graduate program. So now comes the hard part–deciding if I really want to return to the grind of attending classes, reading over-priced text books, dealing with lab partners who never finish their portion of the project, studying late, last-minute cramming for the final exam, all of that stuff I associate with being in college.

You’d think that going part-time would make it easier. Because that’s my plan–take one class per semester. Maybe two classes in those rare semesters where the two I want are scheduled back-to-back so I can minimize the disruption to my work schedule.

The thing is, the part-time bit dramatically increases the amount of time I’ll be in school. And that is the part I worry about–do I really have the mental stamina, at my age, to grind thru school part-time for the next three years? Because that’s the road ahead of me if I decide to pursue this degree.

But in the end that old Chinese saying is what will tip me in favor of starting. Every journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. So I guess on Monday I will take that step–I’ll let the school know I accept the invitation to graduate school. Lord have mercy on my soul and my sanity.

Congratulations. (The value of my degrees just dropped like a rock.) I know you will do great. Did you get the employer to pony-up for some of those tuition dollars?
