Got my student ID yesterday

August 25, 2006

For the first time in seventeen years, I have a student ID. Haven’t had one since I graduated from Texas A&M way back when. But yesterday I stopped by Houchens Hall and picked up my new U of L student ID.

It’s much more advanced than the card I had at A&M. Supposedly there’s a chip inside where you can deposit money so that you can use the card at the copier machines, that kind of thing. Confusingly though, U of L also issues every student a debit card where they deposit any financial aid refunds. Even if you’re not getting financial aid you still get issued the debit card, which also allows you to deposit money and use at the on-campus eateries and such.

Weird to have two cards like that, my understanding is they’re phasing out the smart-card in favor of the debit card. At least for financial stuff, you’ll still need the smart-card to use as your library card and access key to certain buildings.

I hate having yet another card to carry in the wallet. My nice slim wallet, which I used to be able to slip into the front pocket for better security, is now getting too think so I have to put it in the back pocket now.
