Technology is getting too complicated

September 6, 2006

Look at all the companies having problems delivering technology on schedule. Sony’s PS3 is going to be delayed in much of the world. And even in those few coutries where it does launch as originally scheduled, the supply will be much tighter than planned due to production delays. And Microsoft is having a hellish time getting Windows Vista launched.

I was thinking about this because we’re having problems here at work deploying one tiny little database app. I can’t blame Oracle, at least not yet. The DBA’s deployed a new version of the database but when we try connecting to it from our app things blow up. The new database appears to be ready, I can certainly log into it directly thru TOAD. But there’s something wrong, or at least we think there’s something wrong, at the JDBC level. That’s where it all goes kaboom.

Very tedious debugging this kind of thing. Especially since my partner on this project ain’t too helpful in debugging. He doesn’t really think in a systems way, so he’s always looking in the exact wrong place for the problem. So basically I’m having to debug two people’s code, his and mine.

Sigh. Maybe once we track down the core problem I will in fact be able to blame Oracle for all this. That would make me feel better.
