Yarmuth wins!
November 8, 2006Wow, I’m more than a little surprised that John Yarmuth won the US House seat here in Louisville. I thought Northup’s money advantage was too big a hill to climb. Especially since she was using that money to hammer Yarmuth with so many negative ads.
Perhaps in the end that’s what did her in, that her ads were just so relentlessly negative and she didn’t spend anything on positive ads that old us about what she was going to do for us. Instead all we heard from her were negatives, whereas Yarmuth’s advertising was more balanced. He had negative ads against Northup, but also spent on positive ads that simply focused on what he wanted to do in Washington. Maybe that will mean fewer negative ads in the future, I don’t really think so but maybe.
So it’s been a good week basically for me–first I managed to finish running my first marathon, and now Yarmuth actually manages to unseat Northup.

I wondered about that, too (the impact of all the negative campaigning). Ultimately, I think it was the wave of Republican backlash, though, that cost her the seat (what’d Democrats pick up in the house, 28 seats?).
