Sony may have shipped less than 200,000 PS3’s to the US

November 22, 2006

Wow, if this study is true then Sony really botched their US launch of the Playstation 3. They had already lowered expectations by saying they’d have only 400,000 units for the launch event last Friday. Well now it appears they may have shipped as few as 125,000 units to the US.

That’s just horrible. They should have delayed the launch entirely if they couldn’t even get the 400,000 units into the channel. This is no way to launch a system, with supplies so tight. If they don’t have units to sell, then there won’t be people buying the games or accessories either. So Sony isn’t the only one hurt by this production snafu, all their partners and game publishers get hurt as well.

More and more it’s looking like this might be the opening both Microsoft and Nintendo need. I wonder a year from now how the unit sales are going to look. I’d be willing to bet Sony might actually be in third place, behind the Xbox 360 and Wii. The PS3 is also probably going to be out-sold by the older PS2 console for the next year if not longer.

What a clumsy launch this has been. What’s happening to Sony, how could they get their forecasting and supply chain so badly f*&!ed up?
