Typical bad timing for my IKEA trip

December 1, 2006

So once again my knack for bad timing rears its ugly head. I’m going on a quick trip to Chicago tomorrow, today a massive blizzard dumps snow on the entire midwest including Chicago. But luckily the forecast for Chicago tomorrow is actually clear, so I’m certain they’ll have everything plowed and dug out by the time I get there tomorrow.

I’m going up because my Black Friday ambitions were thwarted by the huge crowds. Meaning all the money I budgeted for Black Friday is burning a hole in my pocket. And Southwest has a $49 one-way from Louisville to Chicago’s Midway airport, where I will pick up a one-way rental vehicle.

I’ve reserved a minivan, an Uplander, which I will drive back from Chicago. Filled hopefully with treasures. From IKEA mostly if everything goes according to plan. I have lived in this house three years and the only furniture I really have are the couch and TV stand in the living room. My mattress in the bedroom is sitting on the floor.

Now the Uplander supposedly has fold-flat seats so I should be able to squeeze in a couple IKEA beds into the back. One for me and one for the guest bedroom. Plus a couple chests of drawers and miscellaneous items.

I could probably get similar items locally, like the Home Today on Hurstbourne. But even with the cost of travel and renting the car it probably would wind up more expensive to buy locally. And it wouldn’t be as much fun as going to IKEA.

I hope you take time to hit a few other Chicago attractions. I can only imagine how cool even just window-shopping Michigan Ave. would be this time of year!

Have a good trip. And, good luck!
