James Kim, December 6, 2006
December 6, 2006I didn’t really know James Kim while I was at CNET. Met him a couple times, but never really got a chance to work with him. But it still hits hard to learn that a peer, somebody just 35 years old, passed away.
In his last days he managed something I think few of us could have done–he kept his family alive for over a week in the cold snowy mountains of Oregon despite limited supplies and equipment. It is small comfort but at least he died doing something so noble, desperately trying to find a way to rescue his family.
Such a powerful and simple act of sacrifice, putting those three lives ahead of his own. The best of the human spirit, I have no words to describe how impressed I am with his resolve and determination.
As you move thru the rest of this holiday season I hope you all find time to reflect on the importance of your own families. And to say a brief prayer for James Kim and the family he leaves behind.

I was really shocked at the news. For some reason I felt he’d be found in good condition. I wasn’t aware he graduated from Ballard High School (less than a mile from my house) until today, either. So that, combined with his having worked at CNET, too, really made this seem a truly local loss. Just very sad news, indeed. Our prayers go out to his family and colleagues.
