One advantage of global warming

December 12, 2006

So apparently the Arctic ice cap is shrinking rapidly.  Scientists estimate that this year the ice covers some 2 million square kilometers less than normal.  We may be close to a tipping point–as the ice melts, it exposes more ocean which absorbs more solar radiation than ice does, which means more heat which means even more melting.

If true of course this is a very bad thing all around.  Water levels will rise, global temperature will rise, yada yada yada.

But my boss at my last job said I needed to be more positive about things.  So looking on the bright side, we’ll finally have a true Northwest Passage.  I wonder if that will help the Eastern US?  Because they’ll be able to get tankers of Alaskan oil to the refineries in the East coast much quicker and cheaper than before.  Currently most Alaskan oil goes to the West coast instead.
