Getting a furnace replaced is noisy
December 13, 2006The furnace was inspected a few weeks ago and there was a hairline fracture in the heat exchanger. Not an open crack but the fracture was enough to make me nervous. I have the carbon-monoxide detectors but still I’d hate to take a chance. Sure maybe global warming will eventually make it toasty enough here in Kentucky that I won’t need a furnace. But for the next few years I think I’d better have a safe working furnace.
So I’m working from home today while the guys from B/J Heating and Cooling replace my furnace. And as long as they’re here I’m having them replace the equally ancient air conditioner. Basically means an all-day thing.
Right now it’s rather noisy because they’re hammering away at something downstairs in the basement. I can hear it coming up thru the air register here in the spare bedroom (which is mostly my home office).
In a way I’m kinda excited because one of the nice side-effects of replacing a fifteen-year-old furnace is that I’m also replacing the fifteen-year-old thermostat. The guy showed me the box containing the new thermostat they’ll be installing. It’s a programmable with one of those fancy touch-screen interfaces. Probably way too complicated and powerful for my simple needs but it was not really much extra to go with this particular unit.
At least the weather is moderate today, so I won’t be shivering in the cold while they replace the furnace.
