Sharapova got spanked
January 27, 2007Maria Sharapova got spanked last night. And not in a good way. Serena Williams just absolutely totally dominated Sharapova to win the 2007 Australian Open.
I’m a big tennis fan–I like the sport because it’s just two people fighting it out. Sortof like boxing but without the blood and missing teeth. And I’ve watched a lot of tennis, but I have never seen as dominating a performance as Serena’s. It was amazing how focused she was, the kind of focus that let her time shots no human should be able to hit.
I’ve always been a Serena fan. She’s such a gritty competitor, and in the Australian Open she often showed that grit by having to come back from a set down to win in her earlier matches. But in the final she just came out firing on all cylinders, no need for a gritty comeback.
It was just a masterful performance and probably the best two sets of tennis she’s ever played. It’s definitely the best two sets I’ve ever seen.
