Trench-coats and crazy people
February 13, 2007What is the connection between trench coats and crazy people? We all remember the Columbine shooters with their affinity for trench coats, and now this kid in Utah who killed five people was described as wearing a trench coat.
It probably shows my age but I remember when trench coats were cool, not crazy. Hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer always wore a trench coat. Columbo wore an old ratty one but somehow made it seem kinda cool. And I remember that scene in Face/Off where Nicholas Cage steps out of a car and the wind blows his trench-coat/duster over the top of the car. Very stylish, a very John Woo kind of touch.
I’m too short to really pull off the look, so I’ve never actually owned a trench coat. Which apparently is okay since now you can’t wear them without folks wondering if you’re one of those crazy people.
