If Barry Bonds gets the record, it should have an asterisk next to it

Barry Bonds is just 22 home runs shy of Hank Aaron’s 755 home run record.  Unless some physical or legal condition keeps him off the field, he’ll almost surely hit the record sometime this season.  But when he gets the record it will come with a tremendous cloud hanging over it: just how many of those home runs were steroid-assisted?
Maybe […]

Dad returns from war and surprises his little boy

If you haven’t seen this video yet, you should–a sailor returns from a long stint in Iraq and surprises his six-year old son at school.  Apparently Mom and the teacher knew but the little boy did not know his Dad was coming home from the war.  They wanted to surprise him at school.
When you see […]

A downtown donut mafia

Every shop that sells donuts within two blocks of where I work, sells them for the same price: 80 cents.  Even though on other items these same shops have widely varying prices.  Like the price for a small carton of milk goes from 50 cents to $1.05, candy bars are also in the same range.
And […]

Another print mag falls victim to the Internet

InfoWorld just announced they’re ceasing publication of the print magazine.  It’s all about the Web site and their events business now.  No more ad revenue coming in from the print side of the house.
Most of the news I’ve seen, like the New York Times’ recent quarter, shows that the loss of print revenue is far […]

Yahoo has seriously f#!*ed up their TV search

I used to really like Yahoo’s TV listings feature.  Especially the little module they created to let you slap your favorite channels into a little gizmo that you could include in your My Yahoo page.  But whatever they’re doing in this new beta version has really fucked up what was a great service.  Now it […]

First lawn mowing of 2007

Really I could have mowed the lawn a couple weekends ago, the grass was already tall enough in some spots to justify that. But I’m kinda allergic to grass.  If I get too much of it in my eyes they get red as rust, and very itchy.  That’s not my only allergy to grass–I also […]

The A/C is ready to go

Back in December the fine folks from B/J Heating and Cooling replaced my ancient wheezing furnace.  Since the A/C was just as old as the furnace, I went ahead and had them replace it as well.  Of course back in December it was a wee bit too cold for them to be able to test […]

I’m going to see The Police!

So on Tuesday night I got via email one of those special offer codes from Best Buy.  It let me get into the pre-sale for tickets to The Police show at Churchill Downs yesterday.  It doesn’t guarantee you a ticket of course, just lets you try to buy one of the available pre-sale tickets.
Unfortunately I had a […]

Political candidates in HD?

Do we really want to see our political candidates in HD?  I saw that NBC News plans to launch the HD broadcast of their Nightly News next week.  And the story mentions that NBC plans to also broadcast much of their political coverage in HD, including the upcoming Democratic debate in South Carolina next month.
I […]

Midterm is finally done!

I’m sitting here listening to my Advanced Databases midterm print out on the little HP ink-jet attached to my Linux PC. A 25-page magnum opus. It probably would have been a couple pages longer but I pushed the margins out as far as I could to maximize space. I feel bad killing this […]
