The A/C is ready to go

March 23, 2007

Back in December the fine folks from B/J Heating and Cooling replaced my ancient wheezing furnace.  Since the A/C was just as old as the furnace, I went ahead and had them replace it as well.  Of course back in December it was a wee bit too cold for them to be able to test out the A/C system.  So today I worked from home so that I could meet the A/C guy.  And I’m happy to report the unit passed with flying colors.

The guy who came over was not in the best of shape though.  He huffed and puffed pretty hard just from going downstairs into the basement to check the furnace and air blower.  Then he huffed and puffed coming back upstairs and walking around to the side of the house where he coud check on the new unit they had installed.  Could have just been allergies though–I know the pollen is affecting my asthma and making breathing a bit more difficult.  Maybe it’s even worse for this guy.

Anyway, once he had inspected all the connections and such, we fired up the A/C for the very first time.  Everything worked like a charm.  This thing gets colder much faster than the 15-year-old unit it replaces.  It should make for a nice comfortable summer.

I also learned about a new feature on this thermostat–you can set a temperature range and the unit will automatically control both the heater and the A/C to keep the house in that range.  No more having to specify whether the thermostat is in heating or cooling mode, it decides that itself.  Very nice in the spring and fall when you never know if you’ll need heat or A/C.
