Obama raises almost as much as Clinton
April 4, 2007Oh yeah baby, the Democratic race is officially a real race now. A leaker from his campaign claims that Obama will report almost $25 million in donations for this first quarter. That puts him on par with what Hillary Clinton raised in the same quarter. This despite the fact Hillary should have had a tremendous advantage–all the previous campaign donors to her husband Bill. And she’s been building her organization much longer than Obama has.
Clearly there’s real excitement behind Obama. He could never have raised that princely a sum without the groundswell from donors big and small jumping onto his bandwagon.
What this means is Hillary has a real race on her hand. She can no longer act like the presumptive nominee, whatever aura of inevitability she hoped to build has been summarily crushed by Obama’s success at fund-raising.
I’m still not certain the country is ready for a black president but his chances have definitely improved. Money talks in politics, and his $25 million bankroll speaks volumes.
