The latest I’ve ever filed my taxes
April 8, 2007I transmitted my taxes last night via TaxCut. I was actually pleased with the refund, only a couple hundred dollars each from the federal and Kentucky. Last year I had a big refund, several thousand dollars. Basically that means I gave the government an interest-free loan of that money during the year. I swore not to repeat that so I decreased the deductions out of my paycheck and it worked. The government is already an inefficient provider of services, the last thing I need to do is support their wastefulness by granting them a no-cost loan.
This is the latest that I’ve ever filed my taxes. Just a week ahead of the mid-April deadline. Partly of course I blame my previous employer, CNET. The big restatement of profits included a potential tax penalty for anybody who had exercised stock options in 2006. The company sent all of us who were potentially affected a note instructing that we delay filing taxes until the company negotiated a settlement with the IRS.
But not all the blame rests there, they sent us the final settlement notice several weeks ago. So in theory I could have filed in March rather than waiting this late. Another factor was that damned midterm that sucked up so much time. Plus the first free weekend after the midterm was of course really nice weather so I didn’t want to be sitting inside at my desk working on the taxes.
Now all those excuses are behind me, and the taxes are safely filed before the deadline. I did direct deposit so I should get the refund in a couple weeks. Don’t know what I’ll use it for, it’s not enough to go on a big trip or spending spree. Probably just use it to pay off the credit card bill next month, which will have the huge charge from buying the Police tickets.
