Why do the Pussycat Dolls get to headline an arena tour?

April 15, 2007

As far as I can tell, the Pussycat Dolls have released just the one album. Sure it’s generated numerous Top 10 singles (and accompanying videos), but still it’s just the one album worth of music. So how come they get to headline an arena tour?

I mean, they’re coming to Freedom Hall this week for God’s sake. It’s not the largest arena on earth but depending on configuration it can seat upwards of 19,000 people. If you’re an act with just one album to its name, I don’t care how good the album, you can’t justify trying to fill a 19,000 seat arena. Certainly not in a city the size of Louisville.

Look I think their videos are hot as much as the next guy, but they’re a fabricated, producer-created, video-friendly group. I cannot believe for a second that a live show from them will in fact be live. I bet it will be just as fabricated, over-produced, and pre-packaged as the group itself. There will be no spontaneity, no real performance. I bet it will even be the exact same choreography as in their music videos, they couldn’t possibly have had time to choreograph and practice new material for this tour.

How the promoters can fill arenas this size for a one-album group I will never understand. I know pop culture is aiming for the lowest-common-denominator but surely there’s not enough people dumb enough to buy tickets for this show. Just buy the videos on iTunes, it will be the exact same thing and a lot cheaper than going to their “live” show.
