Is it ever okay to key somebody’s car?
April 21, 2007I was parking at the Eckstrom Library this morning (on the U of L campus) and some jerk in a shiny new Jeep had parked across two spaces. Now on a Saturday morning this isn’t a huge deal, there’s plenty of parking on campus during non-class days. But still, I found it horribly rude that somebody would feel they’re so important that they can occupy two spaces when most of us lowly peons must make do with one parking space. And it wasn’t two spaces at the far end of the lot, no it was two spaces at the front of the lot nearest the library entrance.
Situations like that always bring out the worst in my already bad nature. I was sorely tempted to key the finish on that car. And not a small keying, maybe write out the words “You asshole” in the paint.
I know, it’s not okay to do that. My fear of the law will always overcome my impulse for vandalism, so I”m not going to be keying any cars. But really how else can you ever get the point across to people like that?
If your car is so valuable to you that you can’t stand the thought of a scratch, then don’t drive it into a public parking lot. Buy a second beater car that you can drive around in public. Reserve your prized special vehicle for those occasions when you don’t have to risk parking it with us dirty teeming masses. Jerk.

Yes. The double-parker is a selfish jack ass. But why let his or her inconsiderate behavior pollute ruin your day?
It’s like the frustrated people on the road who get all up tight and flip people off, cut people off, and honk their horns, not for an emergency but as a way of registering a vehicular expletive: It’s best to let them stew in their own anger than to let it upset you.
I notice a lot of expensive cars double parked. It’s like the driver’s saying, “Hello, look at me, I’m rich,” or “My car isn’t like all these cheap cars, so I’m entitled to special parking privileges.” It’s best just to ignore the arrogant drivers.
If their poor parking causes a security risk or danger, takes up a handicapped spot, or takes up spots when they’re at a premium, call the authorities. Otherwise, just laugh that the driver is so self absorbed and don’t give him or her any of your energy.
On a related note, I really wonder about folks who back into spots. What’s up with that?
