Why is Friday traffic lighter than the rest of the week?

May 11, 2007

The traffic on Fridays always seems lighter than the rest of the week.  I don’t think it’s my imagination–cars are spaced farther apart as we race down I-65, and the parking garage is less crowded than normal when I get in.  Are there that many people around here working a 4-day work week?

Now when I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area I didn’t usually drive, I took the BART.  But I don’t recall the Friday trains being any less crowded.  Nor were the sidewalks of downtown less crowded as I walked from the train station to the office.

I would have thought an uber-liberal town like SF would be more likely than Louisville to have a significant percentage of people on four-day work weeks.  Yet it appears the opposite is true–here in Louisville it seems a lot of people don’t have to drive to work on Fridays.

I wonder if I could handle a four-day work week?  Probably not, because it would mean four ten-hour days.  Ten hours seems like way too much time to spend at work.
