Please don’t make another “Pirates” movie
May 29, 2007I just saw the water-logged mess that is the third “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, and now this morning there’s a story in the LA Times that they’re already at work on the fourth installment. Which was kinda obvious at the end of the third movie, with a set-up that left the main characters embarking on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth.
The film was just too long and too self-indulgent. There were large sections of the film that should have either been left on the cutting room floor, or never even filmed to begin with. Like their trip into the Arctic did nothing at all the drive the story forward, it wasn’t even relevant to any of the other plot points. They did it simply because they could, they had the extra money in their effects budget so why not whip up some CGI icebergs for everybody?
Thing is this movie was not that good, certainly not good enough to warrant another sequel. Johnny Depp was still entertaining as Jack Sparrow but it was an act that was wearing a bit thin by the end of the film. It’s time to let it go, leave this franchise at three films.
