Another round of layoffs at CNET

May 31, 2007

I don’t have as many contacts at CNET as I used to, so many of the people I knew are now ex-CNET just like me.  But I have it on good authority that the company had yet another recent round of layoffs.  So far I’ve only confirmed editorial folks, I don’t know if this round was limited to editorial or if it included some other departments as well.

I would have thought judging from previous rounds that they would already have trimmed away all the fat.  Could they now be at risk of cutting too deep?  Or could this round of cuts be in preparation for something, like shutting down some of their operating units?

It does seem to me like they still have too many businesses.  Like I cannot understand why they continue to keep two separate price-comparison sites, Shopper.com and MySimon.com.

Perhaps this round of layoffs is preparing the way to shutter one of those sites, merge their efforts into building one great site instead of trying to prop up two okay sites.  I expect we’ll see some kind of announcements at the next quarterly report, but that’s over a month away in July sometime.
