Grease for lightbulbs
June 29, 2007The little computer in my car alerted me yesterday that the right turn signal was busted. So I went to the AutoZone to pick up a replacement bulb. It’s kindof cool, the bulb has two filaments in it because one is the tail-light and the other is the signal/brake light.
Anyway, at the store the guy mentioned I should use bulb grease to keep out corrosion and make it easier to remove the bulb in the future. You just apply it to the bulb’s connector before inserting into the socket.
I don’t know how I never ran into this before, this lightbulb grease. I know I’ve had to replace lights in my previous cars before, but maybe it was only the front headlight. And that I replaced as a unit, as I recall it was sealed so you couldn’t just replace a bulb.
Anyway the grease comes in these little squeeze packets like ketchup. The one packet probably has enough grease to slather over every lightbulb in the car. Unfortunately I was only replacing the one, so I had to throw out the rest of the packet. Feels a little wasteful to do so but there’s no way to re-seal that little plastic packet.
