I stole wi-fi service today
August 11, 2007Okay officially I don’t think this is criminal. Because Panera Bread makes their wi-fi publicly available. But today I surfed on Panera’s wi-fi from the McDonald’s across the street. So in a way I did steal the service since I wasn’t buying anything from Panera.
See last week I was at Panera and noticed that I was able to see the Wayport access point located at the McDonald’s across the street. So it was natural to wonder if the opposite were true, if I could see Panera’s access point while at the McDonald’s. Today I tested the theory and it does indeed work.
There’s just times when I’m not really in the mood for Panera food. I’m not a coffee drinker so the only things I really pick up an Panera are the baked goods and the occasional soup & salad combo. Other times I still want to get out of the house and surf the Internet but do so while munching on french fries or a cheeseburger.
Now it turns out I can. At least on this one corner where Mickey-D’s and Panera are diagonally opposite from each other.
