Missionary with the too-wide tie
August 19, 2007I never thought 90 degrees would sound cool, but in the midst of this scorching heat-wave yesterday only got to 90 and damned if that didn’t seem cool. Still it must have been quite hot anyway for people walking around in suits. Like the two Mormon missionaries I drove past talking to a couple potential converts.
But the reason they caught my eye was not because it was two guys wearning black suits in a hot Saturday afternoon. It was that one of them was wearing the widest tie I’ve seen in decades. Maybe the kid’s father, or grandfather, wore that same tie on his mission and passed it on to this kid.
I mean, this was the kind of tie from the disco era 70’s or perhaps 60’s. A tie from way before this missionary was born (Mormons go on missions usually between high school and college).
Ties that wide have never come back into fashion, and never will. For damned good reason–you look like you’re wearing a damned dinner napkin.
