Damn but I wish I could play first-person shooters

August 22, 2007

When it comes to video games I have a major handicap–I get severely motion-sick after just a few minutes in every first-person game I’ve ever attempted to play.  Even the ones where you can play over-the-shoulder, like in Resident Evil, still cause me to get sick and have to quit playing.  In fact even old-school shooters like Doom cause me the same issue, so it’s not about the quality of the graphics.  Just the moving around that causes me problems.

Weird thing is that if I can view the character and scenery from far enough away, so that the relative motion is not quite as bad, I can often manage to play the game.  Like in God of War, your character is relatively small and so the camera moves around a lot less than it would if the perspective were closer.

Now I’m reading all these glowing reviews for Bioshock, and I find myself really wishing I could play the game.  It sounds awesome.  Combined with the recent 360 price drop, it sounds like the kind of game that could really accelerate sales for the 360.

But not in my house.  Since the vasy majority of the 360’s great games seem to be shooters, I’m probably never going to buy one.
