Wish I had bet on the Met’s meltdown

According to this article, just three weeks ago the odds of the Mets not making the playoffs was put at 500-to-1.  After all they had a 7-game lead and just 17 games left in the season.  No team has ever been in that position and missed the playoffs.  Until now.
If I had known, I could […]

Where is Emma Peel when you need her?

My employer is a big supporter of the arts.  Our annual art funding drive is bigger than most companies’ United Way drive.  There’s some incentives, like for a pledge of just $3 from every paycheck you get a full-size umbrella.  That’s the pledge level I did this year, and I keep the umbrella at work.
It’s raining […]

Booked my first Mileage Plus trip

I’ve been a member of United’s Mileage Plus program for years.  In fact I can honestly say I’ve been a member for decades.  Yes, I’m that old thank you very much.
I don’t actually fly that often though, and I don’t always fly United.  So it’s taken a while but I now have over 100,000 miles […]

Courier-Journal might be getting smaller

Looks like Gannet is considering shrinking the web on many of their mid-market papers, including the local Courier-Journal.  I’ve already mentioned that I think the current C-J is not worth its newsstand price.  If they shrink the size of the paper then it’s even lower value IMO.
I wouldn’t want to be in the newspaper business […]

Auto-shifting bicycle takes some getting used to

My employer has started a program where they put up a couple bike racks near several of our downtown buildings.  You sign up for the program, get a free helmet, and an electronic card that lets you check out the bikes for up to a 24-hour period.
I finally got around to trying them out a […]

SCO may finally shut down

SCO Group is apparently on its last legs.  Of course just because the company goes into receivership, doesn’t mean their legal challenge to Linux dies with them.  The possible monies if they were to win that case would be an asset, part of the bankruptcy proceedings.  It’s possible even if the company goes belly-up that […]

Going to drop my Algorithms class

After all the trouble and expense I’ve gone thru for this Algorithms class, I’m going to drop the class.  Turns out online classes may not be for me–I had so much trouble finding the motivation to log in, read the assignments, do the homework, yada yada yada.  The structure of having regular classroom meetings was more […]

More reminders of how old I am

It seems like a day doesn’t go by that I”m reminded of just how damned old I am.  A few weeks ago it was the 20th anniversary edition of Robocop.  For God’s sake I remember watching that movie in college.  Texas A&M was one of the universities where they did early previews of the movie, […]

Not even Celine can save the Chrysler Pacifica

Chrysler is planning to kill the Pacifica by next year.  Apparently their expensive promotional tie-in with Celine Dion did not help sell vehicles.  The Pacifica was one of the vehicles she specifically promoted–I remember seeing one parked in the lobby of Ceasar’s when we went to see her show a couple years ago.  I think the […]

Fruit cup vs. iced mocha latte

Sigh.  I know I should try and eat healthier, but sometimes the choices are so difficult.  Like my afternoon snack–I can either spend $3.25 on a small plastic cup of diced cantaloupe, or $3.50 for a grande-sized iced mocha latte.  Guess which one I tend to pick most?  You guessed it, I’m Mr. Iced Mocha […]
