Where is Emma Peel when you need her?
September 26, 2007My employer is a big supporter of the arts. Our annual art funding drive is bigger than most companies’ United Way drive. There’s some incentives, like for a pledge of just $3 from every paycheck you get a full-size umbrella. That’s the pledge level I did this year, and I keep the umbrella at work.
It’s raining today so when I went to get lunch I grabbed the umbrella. Every time I hold the thing, I suddenly feel like I should be wearing a bowler hat, speaking in a snooty British accent, while Emma Peel walks beside me.
I just always associate full-sized umbrellas with The Avengers. Even when the umbrella’s not black, which mine isn’t. It’s bright red with a big art-fund logo. And yet, the theme music from the Avengers always starts playing in my mind when I pick up the umbrella.
I am tempted sometimes to go buy myself the bowler hat. But that would just look silly on me. Unless of course Emma Peel came with the hat.
