Wish I had bet on the Met’s meltdown

September 30, 2007

According to this article, just three weeks ago the odds of the Mets not making the playoffs was put at 500-to-1.  After all they had a 7-game lead and just 17 games left in the season.  No team has ever been in that position and missed the playoffs.  Until now.

If I had known, I could have put a bet and made a ton of money on this.  I wonder if some Mets-hating fan out there did in fact put a bet.  Well I hope they enjoy their money.  They deserve it, because nobody in their right mind would have made that bet three weeks ago.

This has got to rank even higher than Appalachian State beating Michigan, or even Louisville’s collapse this season.  Because those really involved just one or two games (so far).  Whereas during this collapse, the Mets lost eight in a row at one point.  And lost six of their last seven against teams with losing records.

Of course Mets fans are loyal, they’ll still be there next year.  But I bet everybody on the team, all the way down to the bat boys, gets excoriated in the New York press for the next few months.
