Probably have too much candy for tomorrow
October 30, 2007So this year for Halloween I’m handing out Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, in the Snack size. That’s where they take the same cup you’d normally find in the store but wrap them individually instead of putting two together.
The thing is, I knew this was going to be a bit more expensive than the normal candy I buy, the little bite-sized Snickers. Even with giving each kid two or three of the Snickers, you could feed more kids from one bag of Snickers than from a similar bag of the Reese’s. So I decided about five or six weeks ago that I’d just buy a bag or two each time I was at the grocery store. That way instead of feeling like I’d spent a ton of money because I had to buy so many bags, it would feel like less because I was only picking up one or two bags at a time. Apparently I should have kept better track of my purchases because I’ve ended up with far too many bags.
See I was keeping the bags in the vegetable crisper of my refrigerator. Because my computerized thermostat is programmed to let the house temperature rise as high as 80 degrees during the day. That temperature is not an issue now but it was an issue a few weeks ago when I started accumulating the chocolate. I didn’t want them to melt because depending on how it melts and re-solidifes it may not taste right.
But because they were just stuffed into the crisper I didn’t really keep count. Until tonight when I unloaded the crisper to make sure I was ready for tomorrow night. Turns out I have nine normal sized bags, which hold 15 cups each. And one jumbo-sized bag which holds about 30.
Now even allowing for the fact that there’s fewer servings per bag compared to the Snickers from last year, I think that’s way too much. I went thru five bags of the Snickers last year. Unless Halloween is way busier this year I don’t see how I’m going to hand out 10 bags’ worth of Reese’s Cups.
I’m going to see how it goes. If by about 6:30 I haven’t gone thru half the bags, I may start handing out two cups per kid. Because last year 5:30 to 7 p.m. was the peak time. Traffic dwindled rapidly after that.
