If Chrysler builds this Renegade, I am so trading in my car to buy one

November 24, 2007

Oh please please, I hope Chrysler decides to build this Jeep Renegade.  Not only does it look like something from the Halo video game, but it’s an enviro-friendly diesel-electric hybrid.  You can look bad-ass and be saving the environment at the same time.

It would be expensive, no doubt.  A lithium-ion battery large enough to power a vehicle for 40 miles is probably $10,000 by itself.  That’s before you even build the car around it.  You’re probably talking a sticker price of $40,000 for the finished product.  But they would have such a waiting list they could charge whatever the hell they wanted.

Of course the car’s demographics would be rather skewed.  I would guess 90% male, maybe higher.  Now if Chrysler were still a public company it might never take that kind of risk on a niche market.  But they’re a private company now, and this kind of big publicity stunt type of vehicle might appeal to the guys running the company now.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  And I’m going to start saving money now just in case.
