Mom’s house got burglarized

November 25, 2007

Thanksgiving Day my Mom says she went out at 8 p.m. to have dinner with some friends.  When she got home at 11:30 her front door was open, and a bunch of stuff had been stolen.  She lost a laptop (the one I gave her last year) and some buckets of coins she keeps, a mix of gambling money and some collectable coins.  She says there’s also a couple other blank spots on her shelves but she can’t remember what was there.  Which to me says whatever was there can’t of been that much value if she can’t even remember what it was.

The police can’t say for sure if she was targeted specifically or if other houses in the neighborhood might be victims.  They think with so many people out of town for the holidays they may not hear of any related robberies until today and Monday as people trickle back home.

Mom does not live in a big fancy house so I kinda don’t think she was targeted.  Just some idiot who needed the money, and I bet Mom accidentally left her door unlocked.  It sounds to me like a crime of opportunity more than anything.  In a way I feel bad for the criminal.  Driven to such desperation that they had to rob somebody who doesn’t have much of value in her house.  Those coins and the laptop were probably the two most valuable physical items she has.

I’d say it’s probably 50/50 odds whether the laptop ever gets retrieved.  If the criminal is an idiot and tries to pawn it, they may get caught.  But if they’re semi-smart and just sell it to a friend or Craig’s List then they might not be caught.

As for the coins, I think those are a lost cause.  It was buckets of quarters and dollar coins, some normals and some collectable ones.  The crook probably is just going to spend all the coins not realizing many are worth more than face value if the crook can find the right buyer.

Oh well, not a great start to the holiday season.  I hope everybody else had a much better holiday than my family did.
