Yesterday must have been national mail-order catalog day
November 28, 2007I got four different catalogs in the mail yesterday. That’s the most I think I’ve ever received in one day.
Some of them make sense. Like Target, I’m in their demographic and I shop at their store quite a bit. And I’ve filled out their customer satisfaction surveys (the ones where they entice you with a chance at winning a car or a $5,000 gift card). So I can totally understand why they decided I should receive some additional marketing material.
But some don’t make sense, like L.L. Bean. I don’t recall ever buying anything from L.L. Bean. And yet for the past few years I have always received at least one and sometimes multiple catalogs from them. I’m not sure what made them think they fit my lifestyle but I would have hoped their data mining system would realize I have not purchased anything from any of these catalogs. So it should stop sending me the catalogs.
I know I could probably contact them and ask them to stop. But I figure it’s their money they are wasting, and I’m not a stock holder in the company. So it doesn’t really matter to me that they are wasting so much money marketing to somebody who will never make a purchase. I just recycle the catalog and that’s it.
