One Man Star Wars was just hilarious

December 8, 2007

The Kentucky Center had two events going on last night — the preview night for “Nutcracker Suite”, and Charlie Ross doing his “One Man Star Wars” show.  I’m thinking those of us who saw the Charile Ross show had the better time and better use of our entertainment dollar.  Because you can rent Nutcracker Suite but you have to see the One Man Star Wars in person.

Mr. Ross basically performs the entire original Star Wars trilogy, from A New Hope to Return of the Jedi, by himself.  There’s no props, no sound effects, just a few well-timed lighting effects.  Everything else comes from Mr. Ross’ performance.

And what a performance.  He plays out all the key scenes from the movies, with clever asides and winks to the audience scattered throughout.  And some of the pantomimes he has come up with to represent certain parts are dead-on.  Like to impersonate the Imperial Walkers in Empire Strikes Back, he bends at the waist and his arms poke in front of him in a pretty good mimic of the canons that fired from the Walkers.  Or when he does Jabba from Return of the Jedi, he puts his arms parallel to the ground and moves them up and down like Jabba’s huge mouth.

I also loved his take on stuff the whiny Like Skywalker, and the semi-incestuous relationship betweek Luke and Leia.  It was just a great performance.  In a single hour he managed to compress all 3 Star Wars films.  Definitely a must-see if he tours through your city.

And good ad libs, such as when he worked in a cough from the nice woman with whom I attended as part of Luke’s whining about what was wrong… We were on the spit zone, which was wet but worth it.

I thought I saw you down there, but I wasn’t sure. I was thinking in addition to the spit he must have been working up quite a sweat as well, but I couldn’t tell from way back where I was.

One thought though… sadly missing a “Han shot first” joke. :-(
