What will The Steve dazzle us with today?
January 15, 2008Normally I like living in the Eastern timezone. When I lived out in the Pacific timezone, for example, the stock market opened so early in the morning for us. Meaning on those days when I wanted to dump my CNET stock options right away, I had to wake up early so I could put in the call to the stock plan administrator. If I had lived here in the Eastern timezone I could have awoken at a decent hour to put in that same call.
But today is the one day of the year when I hate living here in the Eastern timezone. It’s the Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld out in San Francisco. Instead of learning what’s in store right at 9 a.m., it won’t be until noon out here that his keynote starts.
Last year was of course a big one — he introduced the world to iPhone. It’s hard to imagine how he can top that, because it really was a game-changer in a lot of ways. That device is the biggest step yet to making the Internet truly ubiquitous in everyday life.
I am hoping, though, that the rumoured ultra-light laptop is true. Not a game-changer the way iPhone was, but it could be huge. In fact, while I don’t own an iPhone, I would seriously consider buying an ultra-light laptop. It would be so handy, to have a small yet fully-featured laptop that wouldn’t add six or seven pounds to the stuff you’re already hauling around.
Like at school, the text books for my bioinformatics class are heavy enough that I have to decide whether to bring the books or my laptop. I can’t haul both, I tried once and literally my shoulder was in pain the next day. A super-light laptop would be perfect.
Fingers crossed, Steve. Give us something cool, hip, and must-have.
