My DVD Recorder is dying

January 25, 2008

So for the last three or four years I keep promising myself I’m not going to go thru the madness that is Black Friday. And yet inevitably somebody will have an ad with something I’d really like, at an amazing price, and so off I go to the Black Friday sales. On the Black Friday in 2005, I bought a DVD recorder for I think $125. At the time a great deal, and still a pretty good price on the combo unit I bought (VCR and DVD Recorder).

But of course all good things come to an end, especially when we’re talking no-name brand electronics. That DVD Recorder is starting to wig out on me. Mostly so far it’s playback that’s affected — DVD’s that play fine everywhere else are not playing on the DVD Recorder drive.

Of course though, if playback is bad it makes me suspicious about recording. So far I’ve still been able to record, but I have to assume the whole thing is going to give out on me soon.

I doubt this unit is going to make it to the next Black Friday, when I might be able to find a good deal on a cheap DVR to replace it. The big question I suppose is whether it’s even worth packing this up for my move to Nashville. If it’s about to become a silver-colored brick then I don’t want to bother dragging it with me.
