What I’m going to miss about Louisville
February 7, 2008Today is my last full day living here in Louisville, Kentucky. The movers come tomorrow morning, and given that it’s mostly just furniture left in my house the packing should be pretty quick. Depending on when in the morning they arrive (scheduled between 8 to 10 a.m.) it’s possible I’ll be out of the house by noon.
So I’ve been spending some time thinking about what I’ll miss here in Louisville. Of course first and foremost will be the people. I think it’s a really welcoming and friendly town. Part of that is probably that they’re used to hosting a lot of out-of-towners for big events like the Kentucky Derby and the State Fair.
I’m also going to miss the traffic, or rather the lack of traffic. Nashville isn’t that much bigger than Louisville but it’s big enough to have big-city traffic. Even on the worst traffic days I could still travel the 15 miles from home to work in about 30 minutes. I don’t expect Nashville to be quite that forgiving.
Oh, and the restaurants. I bet that per capita, Louisville has just about the most restaurants of any city in America. And lots of those are really good. I just had lunch today at Shalimar, the best Indian buffet around. The one Filipino restaurant here, Sari Sari, is actually pretty good as well. And Sala Thai–the best basil-chicken around. And Dizzy Whizz, which has the best $2.99 breakfast you can have in one of the best examples of the American greasy-spoon type of restaurant. Just so many fine eating establishments.
There really is a lot to like about Louisville. Even though I’m selling my house, I think I might buy a little condo here at some point. I could totally see eventually retiring to this area. Well, at least in the summer — winter I think I’ll spend someplace warmer
