The last days of CompUSA

February 27, 2008

In an odd little coincidence, I am close to the two CompUSA stores here in Nashville. There’s one maybe two miles from my new employer’s offices, and the other one is about the same distance from the apartment complex where I’ve been staying during my house search.

Like any morbid geek, I decided to stop by both stores recently to see how the final days are going. The stores are maybe 80% empty, taped off so you don’t accidentally wander into the vast emptiness. I hadn’t realized quite how big these stores are, until you see all the empty space. They could carve out several basketball courts in that empty space.

The merchandise remaining in the other 20% is clearly the crap nobody wanted to buy in the first place. Like those keychains with the itsy bitsy screen where you can supposedly upload some of your favorite photos. But the screen is too small to really see the photos, yet makes the keychain too bulky to fit comfortably in your pocket

They’re also closing out all their office equipment, some at really outrageous prices. Like a used black-and-white laser printer for $300. A brand-new color laser printer can be had for that kind of money, so that is probably why the laser printer is still available. I did though pick up a little desktop solar calculater for 75 cents, not a bad deal.

There were a few other items I ended up buying. They had one of these neat Neuros MP4 recorders, which even at Amazon’s sale price are $100. Picked it up for $60 at the CompUSA.

That was my one big contribution to CompUSA’s bankruptcy. If that helps pay some vendor who otherwise is getting stiffed by CompUSA, I suppose that’s a good thing.
