Interesting that UPS is not shipping to me thru Worldport

April 3, 2008

I bought what I hope is a good bargain off eBay — a PCCard modem for the Clearwire service. It was $50, versus about $230 if I buy it from Clearwire. I’ve already got the Clearwire service at home, I just want to be able to use it while I’m out and about within the coverage area.

So anyway, the seller is in California and has sent me the item via UPS. I was looking at the tracking today and noticed that it arrived in Memphis this morning and left there this afternoon. Now I’m just guessing but I doubt that the route from Memphis will take it thru the Louisville Worldport facility. I’m betting it will go direct from Memphis to a facility here in Nashville.

That surprises me a little, since Nashville is closer to Louisville than to Memphis. I had expected that the package would route directly to Worldport since it was coming all the way from California. And then from Worldport to me.

Apparently not. Whatever routing system they use has decided it’s better to go thru Memphis instead.

This of course was never an issue when I lived in Louisville. Everything that was shipped via UPS to me went thru Worldport, since I was living right there.

Now I’m curious about what it would take to make a package go thru Worldport. I’m going to have to try getting stuff shipped from maybe somewhere in the Northeast, like Massachusetts or New York. Maybe that will go thru Worldport
