Bad days ahead for us rice-eaters

April 11, 2008

Those fine folks at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines (my Mom used to work there back in the day) are predicting that prices for rice will continue to rise. Not good news for rice lovin’ fools like me.

At least they aren’t blaming it on ethanol. I’ve read that corn prices are going up because more and more of it is being sold to ethanol producers rather than as food. I guess rice isn’t involved in ethanol production yet so we’re safe from that particular inflationary pressure.

I really love my rice: steamed, fried, used in stuffing, pudding, whatever. So far the higher prices haven’t gotten to the point where I’d want to cut back. But who knows how high it can go.
