The Amish make a fine banana nut bread

May 22, 2008

Last Saturday I went to the Nashville Farmer’s Market, but I did not walk away with any fresh produce. All I ended up buying was a loaf of banana nut bread from this Amish couple.

I’ve been eating a slice of the banana nut bread every night, and I’m still not tired of it. It’s a fine bread, especially nice with some vanilla ice cream. Zap the bread and ice cream for about 10 seconds, the bread is warm and ice cream just starting to melt. It’s heaven.

Now I’ll admit one of the reasons the bread is stilll good this late in the week is that I haven’t put it in the fridge. That would have dried it out. But it so happened that a month or so ago I ran across a really good deal on a glass cake stand. One of those round platters with a heavy glass dome. I’ve kept the bread out on the countertop, inside that cake stand, and it’s been fine all week.

The Amish make good everything! As a child, there was no better way to spend a Sunday than packed in the AMC Ambassador station wagon for a trip to Der Dutchman: http://www.dhgroup.com/en/wc/wc-restaurant.php. It doesn’t get any better than that.
