Seriously — a Geo Metro pulled over for speeding?

May 28, 2008

On my way home this afternoon I passed one of Nashville’s finest writing a speeding ticket to a guy in a Geo Metro. Which seemed rather surreal to me — I’ve ridden in a Metro before, I don’t see how it could possibly have been going fast enough to break the speed limit.

Now I did not actually see what went down, so I’m not absolutely certain this guy was being ticketed for speeding. Maybe something else, like reckless driving. But if it had been something more serious I think the cop would have pulled the driver out of the car. Instead the driver was inside his little Metro patiently waiting while the officer wrote out whatever ticket he was writing. Which is why I’m 90% certain it was for speeding.

This was on Nolensville Road, which isn’t a highway. It’s a commercial street, speed limit is 45 mph. With the rush hour traffic it’s difficult to see how anybody could get close to that speed, especially in a tiny little Metro. Nolensville isn’t flat, it’s pretty hilly. I suppose on the downhill side, with maybe a tail wind, that Metro might have been able to exceed the speed limit.

Why did the cop pick on the Metro driver anyway? The poor guy clearly has other issues, he’s driving a Metro for God’s sake. Leave him be, let him speed a little.
