Wii Fit should be used to treat depression

July 18, 2008

So I’ve managed to snag a Wii Fit, and while I’m not sure that it’s really helping me physically I can say it’s helpful mentally. So much that I wonder if there isn’t a use for this kind of tool in treating miild depression.

The big thing is that everybody in Wii Fit land is happy. When you’re doing the little running game, everybody you pass smiles and waves at you. And then at the finish line there’s a small cheering section as you cross the finish line.

And in the ski jump, even if your jump is pretty bad the crowd still cheers for you. Of course your little Mii character gets kinda sad if the score is low, but still the mood is generally pretty upbeat.

The encouragement can be a bit much at times, like the trainers who walk you through the exercises can get on your nerves a little. But overall it’s happy-land in Wii Fit. I bet that would be really affirming for people who are feeling down and alone, and could use a little lift in their lives.
