First bad movie of the summer
July 19, 2008I wrote last week about the movies I had seen so far this summer. While not all of them were classics, I had actually enjoyed every single movie I saw. Of course that couldn’t last, and tonight I finally saw the first summer 2008 flick that I did not like. It was Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D.
Now if this had been just a TV movie, it would have probably been okay. By TV movie standards, the plot and acting and special effects were decent. But by feature-movie standards it was pretty lame.
The worst part to me was how little they really utilized the 3D aspect. If you’re going to charge everybody an extra $2.50 per ticket to buy the 3D glasses, then dammit use the 3D all the time. Instead there were large sections of the movie where it didn’t seem like they were doing much 3D at all.
And while Brendan Frasier isn’t the world’s best actor, in this one he was particularly flat. It’s like he was phoning it in just for the paycheck. I sure hope he’s better than this in the new Mummy flick opening next month (Tomb of the Dragon Emperor).
This was a Walden Media movie, which means at least it was wholesome family fare. But Walden has produced much better movies in the past — both of their Chronicles of Narnia flicks were vastly superior to this one.
