My mid-life crisis

August 6, 2008

I’m officially having my mid-life crisis. I know this because last night, after two months of looking, I bought a convertible. It’s a used Chrysler Crossfire, the convertible looks much nicer than the coupe does. It’s not a pretty car even in the convertible shape, but it’s a terrific value. Probably for the very reason that it’s not as pretty as some of the competition. I compared it to similar-aged convertibles and it’s a good $5,000 cheaper than any of them. Some, like the BMW Z4 and the Mercedes SLK, were upwards of $10,000 more.

This is a 2006, which actually wasn’t sold until 2007 so it only had 15,000 miles. It is mechanically similar to a Mercedes SLK, same engine and transmission and a lot of the same cockpit layout. The top is a soft-top though unlike the hard-top on the SLK. A 3.2 liter V-6, manual transmission.

I haven’t had a chance to do a real long drive but this weekend I plan on taking her out on the highway, maybe go down as far as Huntsville which I haven’t visited yet anyway.

Very nice! I thought the Crossfire was really a Benz with Chrysler badging. You’ll love it!

Thanks, I do think it will be fun.

But it will also clearly be expensive — an oil and filter change at the Chrysler dealership just cost me $90. Since it’s still under warranty I want to get the service done at the dealership so there’s no static from Chrysler if something comes up.
