End of the world is near

August 25, 2008

I’m not talking about Hillary’s presidential campaign officially coming to an end this week. No, when I say the end of the world is near I’m talking about the Large Hadron Collider over at CERN. Testing has apparently been going smoothly, which means they will be ready for full-scale particle collisions within a couple weeks.

Now it will still be some months after that first collision before they’re able to ramp LHC up to full power. But when that happens, they may not only find the Higgs boson but they might create mini black-holes.

And we all know from Star Trek how dangerous miniature black holes can be. They are the power source in Romulan warbirds, there was that one episode where a problem with that power source caused a time dilation bubble. Very nasty.

When the LHC finally goes full bore, probably sometime next year, that could be it for Planet Earth.
